Evacuating efficiently with LynX®

When there´s a fire alarm in a healthcare institution, reaction time is crucial. To take effective action, it is important that the right people receive the right information at the right time. Smart technology helps healthcare organisations do this because it saves them time - which can make all the difference in many situations. How does it work, exactly?

A fire alarm system detects an emergency situation via its smoke alarms or press buttons and sends this information to a limited number of places. However, if you link this fire alarm system to smart technology, more information can be communicated far more broadly.

How do you maximise the output?

The information is shared with both managers in the building and involved parties off-site. An alarm with clear instructions is given on different types of devices and via several channels: push messages, SMS, spoken message, e-mail …

The solution can not only alert the fire team, but also be used within the broader communication to the rest of the healthcare organisation, including the residents and patients.

The very latest application is communication via the LED lighting in the rooms and hallways which steers people away from the fire and towards the right emergency exit. The same system functions as emergency lighting and can put a spotlight on fire hose reels or emergency exits.

Moreover, the platform that links the fire alarm system to the smart technology generates the necessary reports which are important to have on hand the moment the fire-fighting unit arrives.

What is this platform called?

The alarm and communication platform that makes all of this possible is LynX® connect. And the innovative LED lighting for smart evacuation is called LynX® lifeline. Both solutions come from 25-8, which is a member of the Telecom-IT Group.

The greatest advantage of this system? The time saved during evacuations. This was demonstrated recently by an extensive fire drill held at the new Maas and Kempen Hospital in Maaseik. We worked out a communication and evacuation plan in collaboration with Sabine Bayen, ICT department head, as well as the hospital’s prevention advisor.

During the drill it became evident that the right communication reached all of the parties involved far more quickly (up to 70% faster than was the case in earlier fire drills). Both the prevention advisor and the fire brigade were duly impressed by the results.
