Linking mediscore mddg & lynx® alarm server in covid unit of ghent university hospital

In the Covid unit of its lung diseases department, Ghent University Hospital wants to ensure that the highly relevant medical alarms go straight to the smartphones of the nurses. 25-8 proposed an integration between the MediScore Medical Device Data Gateway (MDDG) from Itémedical and the LynX® alarm server. The latter has already been used for several years to provide the care units of other departments with non-medical alarms. Given the nature of the unit, one major challenge was to implement this within the shortest possible time.

Tom Messiaen, managing partner of 25-8: “Since recently, our LynX® alarm server can present the necessary certificates of conformity and CE markings for meeting the requirements of the Medical Device Regulation. Medical Devices CE Class IIb must be interpreted by specialised software, such as that of Itémedical. At Ghent University Hospital, the information does come on the central monitoring system of Mindray, but an element of smart alerting to the smartphones of the nursing personnel was still missing. The LynX® alarm server from 25-8 in combination with the MediScore MDDG from Itémedical has now filled that gap.”

”We handle the filtering, differentiation and enrichment of the alerts so that the nurses only receive the medically relevant ones”, adds Nele Wuytens, director of Itémedical.  "An additional benefit is that, because we first do an alarm interpretation, nurses can respond more quickly to critical alarms. This counters the familiar problem of alarm fatigue. In this way they can better focus on actually giving care to their patients.”

“This is the first integration in Flanders between the LynX® alarm server from 25-8 and Itémedical. In the Netherlands we have already successfully done this several times with other alarm servers. This forms part of a strategic cooperation and partnership between 25-8 and Itémedical where we offer a CE Class IIb certified solution for the safe handling and interpretation of Medical alerts to Belgian hospitals” concludes Nele Wuytens.

Messiaen: “We regard this first cooperation as highly successful and look forward to what´s coming next. Our solutions are highly complementary and together offer a concrete and unique added value for hospitals."

“I also just want to emphasise that all this was implemented within a very short period. In order to be operational quickly in the department where it has to be used. The lung diseases department is now of course in the eye of the storm more than ever," Messiaen concludes. ”We are doing everything we can to organise the working conditions for the nurses here as optimally as possible.”
